DOC: Halfway houses see decline in walkaways in July |

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) Webster Leavitt became the 102nd inmate to walk away from a halfway house this year according to the Anchorage Police Department. Leavitt kicked the window out of his room at the Cordova Center, and ran away from the facility, police wrote. The Alaska Department of Corrections reported 145 walkaways in 2015, 150 in 2014, and 174 in 2013. While 2016 APD numbers show walkaway numbers from June, compared to July, was cut nearly in half. DOC says recent changes as to who is sent to these halfway houses could be contributing to these results. “We have less mismanagement coming through, and there is no more un-sentenced felons coming through,” said DOC spokesperson Corey Allen-Young.
