Prison escapee Stephen Singleton captured in New Hanover County |

WILMINGTON – Prison escapee Stephen Singleton’s five days on the run ended Monday after he was apprehended by New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies. According to a press release from the N.C. Department of Public Safety, Singleton, 34, was caught after a chase that ended in a crash at the end of Carolina Beach Road. Singleton, who deputies said was driving a stolen vehicle at the time, was injured in the crash, but his condition was not released. Singleton escaped from New Hanover Correctional Center Wednesday, July 20, by placing a shirt over the razor wire of the fence near his dorm. Singleton was captured in the 300 block of Bordeaux Street by members of the sheriff’s office vice and narcotics unit, and gang task force, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.
