County Jail extending prescriptions for released inmates

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —Doctors at the Bernalillo County Jail are now extending prescriptions for inmates suffering from mental illness before they get released.

An estimated 2,000 people get booked into the county jail each month. Many of those inmates are battling mental illness.

When they're booked, those inmates get treatment from jail doctors and often receive prescriptions to help them.

When the inmates get released from the jail, medical personnel will write them a prescription for a three-day supply of medicine so they can maintain treatment.
