Wild mustangs trained by HCF inmates to march in inaugural parade |

Wild mustangs trained by Hutchinson Correctional Facility inmates will march this afternoon in the presidential inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. Two or three of a group of Fort Riley soldiers participating in the parade will ride HCF-trained mustangs, according to a press release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. The 1st Infantry Division Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard is taking 13 horses in total for the parade. The commander leading the color guard will be riding one of the mustangs trained in the KDOC program, the release said. In the same parade, eight mustangs trained here will be ridden by U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector. These horses are used to patrol the border between the U.S. and Mexico, the release said. Horses captured on government land are brought here for training. The Department of Corrections' wild horse and burro program, which operates under the auspices of Kansas Correctional Industries, employs inmates to provide initial training to make the animals useful for organizations and individuals who adopt them, the release said.
