Inmate from Simi Valley dies at Ventura County jail |

A man arrested on suspicion of public intoxication was found dead early Saturday morning at the Ventura County jail four hours after being evaluated by medical staff, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Russell Fries, 55, of Simi Valley, was arrested at 2 a.m. Saturday on charges of public intoxication and obstructing or intimidating the business of a public agency, police said. Officials said Monday afternoon there was no indication of violence or foul play in Fries' death though it is still under investigation. Fries had been booked multiple times in the recent past on suspicion of public intoxication, according to police. He had been booked into jail as recently as Feb. 13 for similar charges, according to jail and court records. In February, Fries had been arrested at least five times, including Saturday.
