Warden Selected for Wyoming Women’s Center

Cheyenne – The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) is pleased to announce that Mr. Rick Catron has been selected to serve as Warden of the Wyoming Women’s Center in Lusk, Wyoming. Warden Catron’s selection will be effective March 27, 2017.

Warden Catron is uniquely qualified to assume the helm at WWC, bringing with him forty years of corrections experience, according to WDOC Director Bob Lampert.

After growing up in Brush, Colorado, Catron began his corrections career in 1977 as a correctional officer in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) at Lompoc, California. Starting in 1981, he promoted through the ranks within the FBOP; next working as a factory foreman for UNICOR in Lexington, Kentucky for three years and as a factory manager in Loretto, Pennsylvania for an additional six years, before moving to Central Office duties in Washington, D.C., where he took roles of increasing responsibility.

From 1994 until 1998, Warden Catron worked as Superintendent of Industries at a federal correctional institution in Danbury, CT, which is a 1,000 bed female secure facility and prison camp. He finished his FBOP career as Associate Warden for Industries, Education, Recreation and Vocational Training in Florence, Colorado.

Warden Catron retired from the FBOP in April 2005 and immediately accepted a position as director of a treatment-based community corrections facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In June 2010, he was promoted to Director of the Casper Re-Entry Center (CRC) in Casper, Wyoming, overseeing the WDOC contracted 100-bed substance abuse treatment program, the Adult Community Corrections Center and the Native American Treatment Program.

“During his tenure at CRC, Warden Catron demonstrated his ability to partner well with WDOC and brought integrity, sound security practice, and solid decision making ability, along with staff and offender accountability to the workplace. He can be expected to do the same at WWC as a visible and approachable leader,” said Lampert.

In addition to his broad management experience, Warden Catron holds an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, with additional coursework in that discipline as well.

Catron succeeds Warden Virginia Pullen, who retired in November, 2016. The Wyoming Women’s Center is the only adult female prison in the state, with a normal operating capacity of 277 inmates.

“I look forward to joining the WDOC family,” Catron said. “I have tremendous respect for the job that the Department of Corrections staff do day-in and day-out for the citizens of Wyoming.”

In his spare time, Catron enjoys antique shopping, playing the guitar and working on motorcycles. He is excited to become a member of the Lusk community. “I grew up in a small town and I look forward to returning to the friendliness and hospitality of a small town,” said Catron.
