The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) has been selected as the accrediting organization for the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) ambulatory health care facilities nationwide. The BOP has 122 institutions which provide medical, dental and mental health services to inmates.

“AAAHC is very pleased that the Bureau of Prisons has confidently chosen us to partner in the accreditation of its health care units,” said Meena Desai, MD, AAAHC board chair. “As the largest established accrediting body for ambulatory settings, we look forward to working with the Bureau of Prisons to establish an accreditation plan that assures it is meeting or exceeding national standards for patient safety and quality health care. We are proud to further our mission to improve health care quality through accreditation with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and will bring an exemplary level of service and collaboration to our relationship.”

AAAHC will accredit correctional ambulatory health care units located throughout the contiguous United States, as well as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The majority of BOP health services are out-patient facilities that mirror the operations of a community clinic.

The Bureau uses medical care levels – ranging from one to four – to align an inmate’s medical needs with institutional capabilities. Care level one inmates are generally healthy, while care level four inmates tend to require daily nursing care or therapy. Most of the Bureau’s institutions are care level two facilities.

The Bureau’s licensed and credentialed health care consultants and specialists provide inmates with essential medical, dental and mental health services. For inmates with chronic or acute medical conditions, the Bureau operates several medical referral centers that deliver advanced care.

AAAHC has identified a group of highly-qualified surveyors for the assignment. AAAHC surveyors are physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory health care.

The AAAHC contract with the Bureau of Prisons follows similar partnerships. In 2004, AAAHC was awarded the contract to accredit U.S. Coast Guard ambulatory health care facilities. In 2006, the U.S. Air Force selected AAAHC to accredit its ambulatory health care facilities worldwide. In 2012, AAAHC was awarded a contract by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to accredit Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
