MORRISTOWN - A 10-year Morris County Juvenile Detention Center officer resigned her job Tuesday and pleaded guilty to punching and kicking a female detainee at the facility in November while the victim was handcuffed and on the floor.

Katria Thorne-Stevenson, 32, of Newark, appeared with her defense lawyer close to 4 p.m. before Superior Court Judge Catherine Enright in Morristown and pleaded guilty to one count of simple assault at the Morris Township-based detention facility on Nov. 5.

Thorne-Stevenson started at the facility on Aug. 21, 2006 and was paid $40,008 annually. Morris County Assistant Prosecutor John McNamara Jr. has recommended that the defendant be sentenced on April 28 to one year probation for her use of excessive force on the detainee.

She resigned her job and will be barred from any public employment in Morris County in the future. Statewide, she is barred from working in any law enforcement position, including in corrections or at another juvenile detention facility but she is not precluded statewide from other forms of public employment.
