Lee County Board approves $160,000 to house female inmates in other counties

DIXON – The Lee County Board approved $160,000 in surplus funds Tuesday to help pay to house female inmates in other counties for the next year or so.

The sheriff was required to move the inmates elsewhere after an Illinois Department of Corrections inspection last month found the jail violated a requirement that men and women be kept out of earshot of one another.

On March 10, six women were moved to Stephenson County Jail and two to Ogle County Jail. Deputies must drive them back and forth for court appearances.

Nearly 64 percent of voters passed a half percent sales tax increase on the April 4 ballot to pay for a new jail – estimated to cost between $15 million and $17 million – but the inmates will continue to be housed in other jails until the new facility is ready, at least 2 years from now.
