More than 62,000 offenders are in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections system, a record high for the state. "What bothers me is back in December we hit a record population of 61,000," Director Joe Allbaugh wrote in a news release. "It has taken just four months for an additional 1,000 people to be included in our numbers of incarcerated, supervised and county jail backup." More than half of the people in the system, nearly 34,000, are outside prison walls, either on parole or probation or in a community supervision program or on GPS monitoring. More than 26,000 are incarcerated in a state or private prison or halfway house. Another 1,700 are in county jails awaiting transfer to a state facility. Read More. |
