LINCOLN — The confiscation of a large amount of homemade alcohol, which followed a rumored assault of an inmate by a corrections officer, sparked a March 2 melee at the Tecumseh State Prison that left two inmates dead, state prison officials said Thursday. “They were really upset that we took their homemade alcohol,” said Tecumseh Warden Brad Hansen. Hansen, along with State Corrections Director Scott Frakes, met with reporters on Thursday to detail the department’s response to the disturbance, the second deadly riot at Tecumseh in two years. Among the changes: converting a housing unit at Tecumseh and another at a maximum-security prison in Lincoln into “control management units” (CMU) with more staff and other security steps to better manage the inmates most prone to violence.
