Two inmate deaths reported in W.Va.

CHARLESTON - A Putnam County man convicted of murder after a woman's 2015 shooting death and a woman being booked at Western Regional Jail both died in West Virginia correctional facilities on Monday, a state spokesman said.

Lawrence Messina, director of communications for the state Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, said internal and State Police reviews now are underway after the two separate, unrelated deaths.

Philip D. Casto, 35, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex during an early morning head count, according to Messina. He was pronounced dead a short time later. The initial indication is suicide.
