Iowa prison: Inmate assaulted staff member |

An Iowa State Penitentiary inmate assaulted a staff member Wednesday, prompting the Fort Madison prison to be placed on lockdown, authorities said. Keith Piper, 33, allegedly struck the staff member multiple times with two homemade weapons, according to an Iowa Department of Corrections news release, which did not specify the type of weapon. The staff member, who was not identified, was escorting Piper at the time of the alleged assault.
