| Inmate Who Walked Away From McCain Valley Fire Camp Apprehended in Long Beach |

LONG BEACH – A minimum-security inmate firefighter who walked away from McCain Valley Conservation Camp in San Diego County on June 13 was apprehended Friday, June 15, in Long Beach. Marco Calderon, 22, was taken into custody at 11:50 p.m. June 15 by agents from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Office of Correctional Safety (OCS) and transported to California Institution for Men in Chino. Calderon was reported missing around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 13. He had last been seen around 11 p.m. in his assigned bunk. OCS Special Service Unit (SSU) agents were activated to locate and apprehend Calderon. CDCR, CAL FIRE, the California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies all assisted in the search. During a thorough investigation, SSU agents determined Calderon was transient and living out of a car with his fiancée in the Long Beach area. At 11:50 p.m., agents arrested Calderon near Cesar Chavez Park. SSU agents will investigate whether Calderon’s fiancée was involved in the escape and if so she will be arrested. Calderon was received into CDCR custody on Sept. 28, 2017, from Los Angeles County to serve a five-year sentence for second-degree robbery. He had been assigned to McCain Valley Conservation Camp since May 2018. He was expected to be released in November 2020; however, his case will now be forwarded to the San Diego District Attorney’s Office for consideration of escape charges. The Office of Correctional Safety mission is to protect the public and serve CDCR investigative and security interests. OCS is the primary departmental link with allied law enforcement agencies and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission have been apprehended. |
