Prison inmate, who was convicted in Forsyth County, commits suicide

A prison inmate, who was convicted of several offenses in Forsyth County, died Thursday at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor after an apparent suicide, authorities said.

Matthew Howlett, 52, was found unresponsive in his cell at 11:55 a.m., the N.C. Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice said in a statement. The prison's medical staff and paramedics were unable to revive Howlett, and he was pronounced dead at 12:14 p.m. Thursday at the prison.

Howlett was serving time for several offenses, including a conviction for felony breaking and entering in Forsyth County in 2009, the division said.
