Ohio's 10 oldest and 10 youngest prison inmates

COLUMBUS, Ohio--The average age of an Ohio prison inmate is about 38. But there are many Ohioans behind bars who, in terms of age, are far from average.

As of January, more than 3,100 of Ohio's 49,500 inmates were 60 or older, while another 529 were under the age of 20, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

For Ohio's oldest inmates, some have been behind bars for decades, while others were already in their 80s when they were arrested. They're in prison facilities around the state -- including the Franklin Medical Center, the state's prison hospital in Columbus.

All 10 of Ohio's youngest inmates, by contrast, are housed at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, outside of Columbus. While they are younger than 18, they were tried as adults under Ohio law (trial as an adult is mandatory for murder and other serious crimes for young offenders under certain circumstances). But, as juveniles, court records on their cases are often kept off-limits to the public.
