Inmates repay prison officer Randy Geer's compassion in his hour of need

Some accused Randy Geer of having a chocolate heart — someone who melts and is easily sweet-talked by inmates — not a compliment in the world of corrections.

He admits he showed more compassion than perhaps prudent during his 30-year career with the Oregon Department of Corrections, the first 15 years at the state penitentiary in Salem.

He was supposed to be tough and detached, more of a drill sergeant than a counselor. But Geer managed to find a balance at the maximum security prison, almost unthinkable for someone in his position, with his history.
