Inmates at the Elmira Correctional Facility face disciplinary charges stemming from attacks on officers, and two visitors were arrested after attempting to bring drugs into the prison, all this month. In prisons throughout New York state, K-9 units have aided in an increased number of visitor arrests attempting to bring in drugs. According to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, in 2016, the dogs were responsible for 210 visitor arrests for drugs, and in 2017, the dogs were responsible for 230 visitor arrests for drugs.
