Canadian correctional officers need more training
CBC News

A lack of training for Canada's correctional officers is putting both them and inmates at risk.
That's the conclusion of a report commissioned two years ago by Corrections Canada.
Kingston Penitentiary is locked down for perhaps the rest of the week while an extensive search goes on for drugs, weapons and evidence of illegal activities inside the prison.
Situations like this are good examples of why the report says the government needs to
spend more money to train the men and women who carry out such operations.
The officers are supposed to receive regular training on how to conduct proper searches – to avoid, for instance getting accidentally stuck with a needle – and proper use of weapons.
'I don't want to be trying to quell a situation and, because I don't have some training, accidentally kill somebody,' said John Edmonds, a union spokesman.
'It's just dire circumstances when we have to use a firearm because lethal force or a weapon is our very last recourse,' he said.  'So the training provides you with a familiarity with the weapon ... and people aren't getting that right now.'
The manager responsible for training at Corrections Canada, Denise Plante, says national standards are in place, and officials are studying ways to improve training. She says officers need more than weapons training.
'When officers speak about needing a refresher on weapons so they don't get stuck, your best tool is your mouth,' Plante said. 'If you're screaming at someone, don't be surprised if they scream back. But if you're trying to defuse the situation, that might work first.'
As for getting the money she needs to make all these changes, Plante says she's working on it.
'We're looking at what we can do to redress the situation,' she said. 'That's all I can tell you at this point.'
