Wisconsin will
begin bringing female inmates back to the state from out-of-state prisons
next month after a Legislative committee last week unanimously approved
funding to staff a newly-converted women's prison in Waupun.
But Corrections
Secretary Jon Litscher said returning all of the 5,000 prisoners, male
and female, housed out of state could be more than two years away.
Litscher said
the lawmakers' vote to spend $880,000 to hire workers for the newly-converted
John C. Burke Correctional Center in Waupun ensures that all female inmates
will be back in Wisconsin by Dec. 31. The Waupun minimum-security prison
will accommodate about 350
women.
The first
group of inmates will be returned from a federal prison in Alderson, W.Va.,
beginning Oct. 19. The state will start returning female inmates from the
Central Oklahoma Correctional Facility in McLoud, Oklahoma on Nov. 16.
Litscher said
he did not know if it would be possible to bring all male prisoners back
within the next few years, but said corrections officials have already
been looking at alternatives to incarceration to save space and taxpayer
money.
The state
will slowly be getting more room to house inmates over the next two years.
Several prisons
are slated to be constructed in the coming years.
