p>In the past decade, dozens of Wisconsin inmates have died under questionable circumstances in the state's prison health-care system, according to an eight-month investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The newspaper reported recently that its examination of every inmate death since 1994 and several previous deaths revealed practices and policies at the Department of Corrections that raise concerns about prisoners' access to basic, potentially lifesaving medical treatment. Although the head of the state prisons defended the quality of medical care for inmates, the investigation underscored concerns raised this year after the death of asthmatic inmate Michelle Greer in the Taycheedah Correctional Institution, the Journal Sentinel said. Greer's death, which officials have said may have been prevented if she had easier access to a hand-held asthma inhaler, was among dozens of similarly questionable deaths the newspaper found when examining records of police and the Department of Corrections for 14 sites in 11 counties. It gave no specific number as to how many deaths were under questionable circumstances, but its account cited details of seven examples. Department of Corrections Secretary Jon Litscher told the newspaper he does not believe any inmates died in the past six years as the result of improper medical care. |
