A rebellion in an overcrowded prison in southeastern Brazil on November 25 left one inmate dead and at least six others wounded, police said.
The uprising at the Taubate Public Jailhouse, 130 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Sao Paulo, began in the early morning hours when more than 300 inmates grabbed three officers and one police officer hostage. Shortly afterward, rival groups clashed and one prisoner was beaten and stabbed to death.
Police said the rebellion was staged to protest the overcrowded conditions at the prison, which holds 310 inmates in facilities built to hold no more than 80.
Police troops have surrounded the prison and officials were negotiating the release of the hostages, all of whom were reported unhurt.
