A man already in jail on federal
charges faces even more trouble for allegedly plotting to kill those who
could convict him.
The accused ringleader of an auto-theft
ring, 22-year-old Roman Zalutskiy, faces conspiracy charges for allegedly
putting a hit out on a California Highway Patrol officer, three witnesses
and an informant.
Authorities say that Zalutskiy offered
$20,000 and a new luxury car to a cellmate to kill the people. The cellmate
told authorities instead.
'We actually had an undercover officer
that went into prison who was introduced as a possible person who could
carry on with the deeds that he wanted,' CHP spokeswoman Kelly Baraga said.
Zalutskiy and 26 other suspects
were arrested in June after a nine-month investigation.
Zalutskiy is one of three suspected
ringleaders accused of masterminding an elaborate auto theft operation
in the central valley.
Police say that they are hoping
to make more arrests in the case.
If convicted of all the charges,
Zalutskiy could face 310 years in prison.
