| Oklahoma Prison Escapees Recaptured |

Police have captured a convicted murderer-rapist and a convicted kidnapper who broke out of an Oklahoma maximum-security prison last week. Authorities
snared James Robert Thomas, 25, and Willie Lee Hoffman, 21, in a house in the
small town of Lehigh around 2 p.m. EST on January 17, police said. Earlier,
in nearby Coalgate, investigators found a white automobile the two are believed
to have stolen from McAlester, home of the maximum-security Oklahoma State
Penitentiary from which they escaped. The prison is about 50 miles from Lehigh. The
duo, who have a history of breakout attempts, escaped before dawn on January 15
after yanking their cell's toilet out of the wall, sliding through a maintenance
shaft to the roof and hopping two razor-wire topped fences. A
third inmate got caught between the fences and was captured. All three had been
housed on a cell block that includes death row. Thomas
was convicted of raping and killing an 81-year-old female neighbor when he was
17, and was sentenced to a life term without parole. Hoffman was serving a
20-year sentence for kidnapping and other charges. |
