| State asks counties to share costs of juvenile detention |

After years of relying on the state to help defray the costs of processing and detaining arrested juveniles, Broward, Miami-Dade and other counties across Florida are being asked to share in the burden -- a request that could cost them millions of dollars. As part of the $33.4 million in cuts Gov. Jeb Bush is recommending in the Department of Juvenile Justice's budget, the governor is asking the agency to bill counties for the cost of running juvenile processing centers as well as detention services provided to kids awaiting sentencing. Once juveniles are sentenced, the state would take over the financial burden. In Miami-Dade, where the police department already provides $4 million a year to operate the Juvenile Assessment Center, the county's tab could be an additional $9 million just for detention services alone. In Broward, the figure would be $7 million. Several lawmakers, elected officials, judges and juvenile justice advocates said recently that they oppose the idea. Some officials believe that by shifting juvenile costs to counties beginning Oct. 1, the state would be saving $63 million this year. The savings could be as high as $85 million in future years. But asking the counties to run the processing centers and paying for detained juveniles could have an adverse effect on juvenile crime, which has decreased in recent years, critics of the cuts say. |
