| Maine Department of Corrections set to move into new prisons |

The Maine Department of Corrections will move inmates into three new facilities in the next year in an effort to improve conditions for both prisoners and prison workers. The state is closing the 500-bed Maine State Prison in Thomaston in November and will move into a new 816-bed prison in Warren, which will be combined with the existing 100-bed Maine Correctional Institute. In August, the 144-bed Northern Maine Juvenile Facility will be ready to take half the youths now at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland. Those remaining at the Maine Youth Center will move into a new 160-bed facility currently under construction at the South Portland site. Officials say the new facilities will be less expensive to operate than the prisons currently in use. They also say better conditions will improve prisoners' chances of rehabilitation. In the Maine State Prison, the state's main adult facility, prisoners will live in pods, which are considered more humane than existing prison blocks. They'll also have doors instead of bars, and windows to the outside. There, they'll have more interaction with corrections officers and other staff and will have access to improved treatment programs, officials say. The Thomaston prisonis almost 180 years old and decrepit. The prison is demoralizing for inmates and sometimes for the staff that works there, he said. Guards patrol catwalks in front of a four-story stack of cages. All of those changes, proponents say, are designed to reduce the likelihood that a prisoner will commit another crime when released. The new youth facilities are scheduled to open in August. Juveniles aged 11 to 21 will be housed in youth development units, where staff will develop treatment and counseling programs while teaching offenders how to manage their behavior. |
