| Cops Find Tunnel to Brazil Prison |

Police recently found a massive tunnel heading from a slum toward a maximum-security prison on Rio De Janeiro's poor north side. The 88-yard, concrete-lined tunnel was not yet completed, but it had reached within 165 yards of Bangu 3 prison. 'I was impressed with the size and the technology. Whoever planned this understood engineering,' State Security Secretary Josias Quintal told reporters at a press conference. The tunnel, dug some six yards beneath the earth, was nearly three feet wide and five-and-a-half feet high. It was filled with pickaxes, fans and lanterns as well as two water pumps. 'It looks like something out of James Bond,' Rio Justice Secretary Joao Luiz Pinaud told reporters. Police arrested a man who was eating lunch in the house where the tunnel started. The man told police he had worked on the tunnel but said he had no idea where it was headed. The Bangu 3 prison houses 896 inmates. Police discovered the tunnel after an anonymous tip. |
