A prison van went out of control on an icy Interstate and crashed into a concrete abutment in Ohio last week, killing a correctional officer and injuring four other people. Three officers and two inmates were in the van, which was headed to Columbus from the Warren Correctional Institution near Lebanon in southwest Ohio. The accident about 25 miles from Columbus and no other vehicles were involved. The van was taking the prisoners to Ohio State University Medical Center for routine medical care when the crash happened. Two officers and two inmates were taken to hospitals. Two of the four were in fair condition at Grant Medical Center in Columbus; the condition of the other two was not immediately available. Names of the prisoners and guards were not released. The prison, which houses about 1,250 inmates, is classified as a close-security prison, a step below the maximum-security category. |
