| Father of Texas Escapee Is Arrested |

The father of one of the seven escaped Texas convicts was arrested last week on charges of supplying the getaway car. Raul Rodriguez, the father of Michael A. Rodriguez, was arrested and jailed along with a friend, Patsy Gomez, on $700,000 bail. A third person was being sought. 'We assume father and son were communicating by letter and possibly a third party who may have visited Rodriguez in prison,' said Larry Todd, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. 'We believe they had been planning the escape for at least six months and probably longer.' The Dec. 13 escape was the biggest breakout from a Texas state prison in recent history. The seven inmates overpowered workers at the prison in Kenedy, about 60 miles from San Antonio, and fled in a prison pickup truck. Hours later, the pickup was found abandoned at a nearby Wal-Mart. Investigators said someone left a blue and silver GMC Suburban there for the men to use. The seven were later charged with killing a policeman Dec. 24 during a holdup at a sporting goods store. Six of the convicts were finally captured in Colorado; the seventh killed himself rather than give up. Todd said investigators believe the elder Rodriguez, 61, furnished the money to buy the Suburban, which had been advertised for sale in a newspaper shortly before the escape. Todd said Gomez, 41, made the purchase. Dallas TV station WFAA reported that a fourth person involved in acquiring the vehicle alerted authorities. Investigators said that person was unaware of what he was involved in until he heard news reports of the escape. |
