The officers almost couldn't believe their eyes when they saw a man trying to break into - not out of - the Volusia County Correctional Facility. A correctional officer spotted Wayne Starkey, 35, lurking behind the correctional facility last week, said sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson. The officer told Starkey he was in a restricted area and ordered him to leave. Starkey returned to the area about 10 minutes later and began climbing the guard tower on the west side of the facility, officers said. Correctional officers detained Starkey and called the Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrested him and charged him with one felony count of burglary. Starkey said his girlfriend was incarcerated at the facility off Indian Lake Road. He claimed the woman had mailed him letters he never received. So, he told officers he decided to go to the facility on Indian Lake Road, scale the guard tower and look for the mail. Starkey, of Daytona Beach, was booked into the Branch Jail and later released on $2,500 bail. |
