A deputy warden in Ohio has been demoted to administrative assistant because an inmate was left in isolation for three months without a cot and often with no clothes but underwear, the prison system said. Ron Forrest was in charge of operations and security at Orient Correctional Institution when Willie Thomas, 67, was placed in isolation after scuffling with corrections officer Vicky Wilder on Oct. 5. Isolation was warranted because Thomas violated prison rules, said Joe Andrews, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. However, he said Forrest knew or should have known that Thomas was in the cell without clothing or a mattress. Andrews said two other people also could be disciplined, but he refused to identify them. Thomas remains in isolation, and is given an hour a day to exercise and shower. He was imprisoned in 1987 after a receiving an eight- to 15-year sentence for a felonious assault conviction in Cuyahoga County. His sentence was extended for hitting a guard and a food-service worker at two prisons, Andrews said. Orient is a medium-security prison about 15 miles south of Columbus. |
