Police Search for Illinois Escapee

Police warned abortion clinics to be particularly cautious as they search for an escaped inmate who allegedly threatened abortion doctors.
Clayton Lee Waagner - who once said he was on a mission from God to kill abortion providers - escaped from the DeWitt County jail February 22 while awaiting sentencing on weapons possession and vehicle theft convictions.
Sheriff Roger Massey said a design flaw in the 5-year-old jail allowed Waagner to escape.
He wouldn't give details. But sources close to the investigation told The Pantagraph newspaper in Bloomington that Waagner escaped through a ventilation duct.
Waagner, 44, from Kennerdell, Pa., was arrested Sept. 12, 1999, after entering Illinois with his wife and eight children in a stolen motor home with four stolen handguns under the driver's seat. He was convicted in December.
During his trial, Waagner said he was getting messages from God.
He told prosecutors he was on his way to Seattle to kill a doctor, and throughout his trial he said he regretted not being able to carry out his plans.
'I would much rather be sitting on death row right now for having succeeded than sitting in some county jail for having failed,' he said.
Authorities described Waagner as an adept car thief who also has survivalist skills. He has eluded authorities on two other occasions, including a five-day manhunt in a national forest.
