A rape defendant who escaped from custody during the confusion of the earthquake that rocked the Puget Sound area was recaptured about 1,000 miles away.
Robert Kleest, 44, was nabbed by federal marshals Tuesday at a house in Boone, Colo., 50 miles southeast of Colorado Springs, Pierce County sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer said.
Deputies moved Kleest, who was not handcuffed, and 10 other inmates out of the County-City Building and into a nearby jail annex, but Kleest slipped away and was later seen running into the street, shedding his jail shirt.
He apparently left town by bus, but a tip led to his arrest in Colorado.
Extradition proceedings were pending.
The magnitude 6.8 quake injured more than 400 people, few of them seriously, and caused an estimated $2 billion in damage.
