The suspected leader of what may be the most sophisticated gang in Albuquerque is facing more felony charges after he and his jail cellmate allegedly tried to have heroin smuggled into jail inside a fast-food burrito. The plan nearly worked, Albuquerque police gang Detective Paul Hansen said recently. But criminal complaints filed against alleged Los Padillas leader Jeffrey Padilla and former cellmate Mario Gomez said a jail officer who was to bring in the fast food had a last-minute change of heart. He did not give the food to the inmates, and another officer started eating the burrito instead. He soon chomped down on a chunk of black tar heroin. The officer, who was given a medical check, did not become ill, police and jail officials said. Padilla and Gomez have been behind bars at the Bernalillo County Detention Center on murder charges. The new charges include conspiracy to commit drug trafficking and bringing contraband into a jail. Hansen said he also obtained arrest warrants for the jail officer who allegedly was to bring in the food and the woman who brought the delivery to the jail. The burrito incident took place last April, but the charges were filed just this week. Hansen said the charges weren't filed sooner because it took months to identify Manzanares as the alleged delivery woman. |
