Two murder suspects escaped from jail Sunday by beating a pair of officers and jumping out a second-story window, authorities said. Police caught a third suspect, David Kenneth Christian, 38, who broke his leg after also leaping from the Mower County jail in southeastern Minnesota. Vernon Powers Jr., 28, and Scot Christian, 30, remain at large, authorities said. 'We are checking every lead we have to find where they are at,' said Sgt. Steve Howard of the county Sheriff's Department. The fugitives kicked a male officer, who was hospitalized with bruised ribs. They also beat a female officer and threw cleaning solution in her face, authorities said. Officers learned of the escape when they saw Christian writhing on the ground, dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit. Authorities believe Powers and Christian, who were also wearing orange jumpsuits, were injured in a fight with officers. Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp said it didn't appear the escape had been planned. 'I think it was a spur-of-the-moment, take-advantage-of-an-opportunity type thing,' Philipp said. The three inmates were among four St. Paul residents charged in August with killing two construction workers at an Austin motel. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the State Patrol and search dogs helped in a search around Austin on Sunday. St. Paul police were put on alert in case the men headed toward the Twin Cities. 'We don't have any information right now that they're coming to St. Paul, but they've got some roots here, and we're taking that into consideration,' said St. Paul Police Cmdr. Jim Singer. |
