Two murder suspects who touched off a multi-state manhunt after escaping from a southeast Minnesota jail were arrested this afternoon without incident after a SWAT team of Minnesota Gang Strike Force members and agents from the FBI surrounded a house in Oakdale. The escapees, Vernon Powers and Scott Christian, considered armed and dangerous following their daring escape Sunday morning from the Mower County Jail, were taken into custody about 1:15 p.m., authorities said. It was not immediately known if any weapons were found inside the home. 'No one got hurt, and they're in custody now,' said Peter Orput, the assistant state attorney and gang strike force prosecutor who is prosecuting the two men and two other suspects in connection with the June 30 robbery-slayings of two construction workers at a motel in Austin, Minn. 'These are two really bad guys and we're glad they're back in custody,' Orput said. The arrests came after Kevin Moore, a member of the gang strike force, received a tip from an informant about the suspects' whereabouts. A search warrant was executed, and a team of gun-toting agents from state and federal agencies was dispatched to a home in the 600 block of Greenway Avenue in Oakdale. Two women suspected of harboring the fugitives were taken into custody. An infant child was also discovered inside the home and turned over to county social service authorities. |
