Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton has set an execution date for Kentucky's first state-run execution since 1999. Patton officially set April 10 as the execution date for Eddyville State Penitentiary inmate Ralph Baze, 47, of Columbus, Ohio. Baze was convicted and sentenced to die for the 1992 killing of Powell County Sheriff Steve Bennett and Deputy Arthur Briscoe. Baze was convicted for hiding and killing the officers as they approached his home to arrest him, according to reports. He shot each man three times in the back with an assault rifle and then hid in the mountains and prompted a massive manhunt that ended when he surrendered to the Kentucky State Police in Estill County. The double homicide fell under a Kentucky statute that calls for the death penalty for anyone who intentionally murders a state or local public official, sheriff or deputy sheriff, while in the line of duty. Baze lost appeals at every level, including his argument that officers were trying to arrest him on bogus charges. Baze told the press he plans to appeal again and in hopes of gaining clemency from Gov. Patton. Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty State Chairperson the Rev. Patrick Delahantry said if Baze is executed it will be a sad day for Kentucky. |
