A privately operated prison seen as an economic boost for the Youngstown, Ohio area has announced 200 layoffs, about 45 percent of its 449-member staff, and more cuts could be ahead. The reductions at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center operated by the Corrections Corporation of America of Nashville, Tenn., reflect a declining inmate population, the company said. An additional 50 to 100 workers could be laid off if the inmate population drops more, Warden Brian Gardner said recently. The prison will trim the work force because the 2,106-bed prison has only 574 inmates. The prison housed up to 1,500 inmates from Washington, D.C., at one time. The prison is getting fewer prisoners from Washington as the U.S. Bureau of Prisons begins send many of the inmates elsewhere. As of December, the prison had an $11 million annual payroll and paid the city $250,000 a year in income tax. Reduced staffing will cut the city's income tax collections by more than $112,000 a year. |
