A truck hauling canned soup drifted off a California highway and slammed into an inmate work crew last week, killing a convict and injuring 10 people. Travis Frank Coppage, 34, was driving south on Highway 99 when he looked into his left side-view mirror and drifted off the pavement into the crew from the Community Correctional Facility, the California Highway Patrol said. His tractor-trailer rig struck a jail van, then hit other inmates picking up trash along the highway. One inmate was killed. The truck, hauling a cargo of Campbell's Soup, crashed into a fence, overturned and burst into flames. Three motorists pulled Coppage from the cab before it was engulfed in flames, said CHP officer Mike Campbell. Coppage and nine others were taken to hospitals. Investigators had not decided whether charges would be filed against Coppage. |
