Officers at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility reached an agreement with the facility's parent company last week and called off a planned strike. The prison's parent company, Texas-based Cornell Companies Inc., and the union representing the officers agreed on a 5 percent pay raise this year, and a 4.5 pay raise for each of the following two years. Health care costs, which had also been an issue, will not change. Geoff Weston, representative of the Rhode Island Private Correctional Officers, said 'some language surrounding seniority rights' had also been changed, but he would not be more specific. Contract talks between the union representing the guards at the private, for-profit facility and Cornell broke down last week. Union members had voted to begin the strike but resumed negotiations with Cornell. Wyatt houses 330 inmates, most of whom are federal prisoners awaiting trial or sentencing, and employs around 100 workers. The Central Falls jail is one of 71 correctional centers around the country operated by Cornell. |
