Authorities have arrested a Rowan County, N.C., detention officer after they say he tried to smuggle a gun into an inmate and aid in an escape.
Capt. Dean Combs of the sheriff's department said that the officer's acts are a betrayal of the department.
Officer Marcus Holloman faces charges for allegedly trying to smuggle an automatic handgun to a prisoner Willard Smith.
'You catch an officer sometimes trying to make a buck selling drugs, but this is the first time I've been associated with an officer trying to bring in a weapon,' Combs' said.
The inmate is also known as the Cowboy Bandit because he is charged with committing robberies dressed as a cowboy.
Just before 7 p.m. Friday, the wife of the inmate went to a women's bathroom outside of the jail. Officers said that she had a cloth bag with a gun and money inside. She dropped the bag into a trashcan and left.
Holloman retrieved the bag just before midnight and was arrested a short time later. He had been a detention officer for Rowan County for six months. He faces three charges in the case and is in the Davidson County jail under $250,000 bond.
