The Marshals Service charged Lawrence Candelaria, 43, with aiding and abetting escape after three inmates broke a window, sawed through a metal bar in a first-floor cell and jumped a 14-foot fence. Cornell Companies Inc. of Houston, which runs the jail, fired Candelaria Wednesday after his arrest, a company spokesman said. Neither U.S. marshals nor Cornell officials would give additional information on the arrest, citing their ongoing investigation. 'We've got an ongoing investigation that's not finished yet,' said Santa Fe County Sheriff Ray Sisneros. A U.S. Department of Justice news release stated Candelaria was arrested Wednesday and arraigned the next day. The Marshals Service would not release information concerning where he was being detained. Candelaria faces a maximum five years in prison as well as a $250,000 fine, the news release said. The three inmates, who were the first to escape the jail in 21/2 years, are still at large. Officials said earlier this week they believe an employee gave the escapees a hacksaw, ball-peen hammer and metal punch to leave the jail. Nineteen federal inmates will be relocated as a result of the escape because they - like the escapees - have been inside the jail for more than a year. Inmates who have been at the Santa Fe County jail for that time can cultivate relationships with jail staff, Senior Warden Lawrence Barreras has said. Rudolfo Ruiz-Godinez, also known as Rudolfo Ruiz-Garcia, 28, a Mexican national, and two Phoenix-area men, Vicente Manuel Tijerina, 31, and Luis Ramon-Lopez, also known as Luis Santana, 41, escaped the jail about 10:30 p.m. Saturday night during a shift change. |
