About 300 inmates at a southeastern Massachusetts jail took part in a disturbance Sunday that included holding an officer hostage for about 40 minutes, officials said. The unrest at the Dartmouth House of Corrections started at about 3:15 p.m. in one of the jail's housing units and spilled out into a courtyard, Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said. It ended an hour later, he said. About 300 inmates were transferred Sunday night to other jails due to 'extensive damage' in some of the jail's housing units, Hodgson said. Windows were broken and electric control panels that open and close cell doors were damaged. The officer was held by about 70 prisoners until the jail's tactical response team convinced inmates to leave the unit. Hodgson said the officer suffered an injured back. He had barricaded himself in a bathroom and was hurt when inmates forced the door open, Hodgson said. Hodgson said he did not know what prompted the disturbance. 'We'll be speaking to inmates and find out what transpired,' he said. Another officer sustained a cut hand from a thrown rock, Hodgson said. He did not know if any inmates were injured. The 3-year-old jail holds about 700 inmates. |
