| Hostage freed, standoff ends at top Brazil jail |

Four inmates freed a hostage and ended a standoff with police at a key Brazilian detention center for high-profile prisoners on Thursday after being promised transfers to jails in their home states. Police secured the release of the captive officer after five hours of negotiations with the gang which was led by a gold robber. They are kept in the same section of the center as Mexican popstar Gloria Trevi and Brazil's top drug smuggler. During the standoff, a helicopter with a sniper leaning out hovered overhead as officers from a special operations brigade holding automatic rifles surrounded the building and police cordoned it off with yellow tape. Federal police spokeswoman Viviane da Rosa said all 24 high-profile prisoners housed in the center are safe. Police had feared the group wanted to take Trevi hostage in her cell. Authorities agreed to meet the inmates' transfer demands as they released the police officer, the spokeswoman said. While minor in scope compared to the frequent rebellions in Brazilian prisons, Thursday's incident was unusual because it occurred at a detention center inside a building in Brasilia that is a national headquarters for the federal police. |
