Sheriff Joe Arpaio pulled the plug on portions of his Internet Jailcam last week because it showed female inmates using a toilet. Assistant Attorney General Gail Thackeray, a cybercrime expert, asked Arpaio to shut down offensive portions of the site after getting complaints from activists who have long condemned the Jailcam as a violation of the privacy rights of people who have not been charged with a crime. The Jailcam broadcasts a video from the booking and holding areas of the Madison Street Jail. Until last Wednesday when it was shut down, viewers could gain access to the women's area of the jail if they provided their name, e-mail address and shopping preferences. The consumer information went to the host of the site, Santa Monica, Calif.-based crime.com. No spokesman for the site could be reached. The Sheriff's Office receives no money from crime.com., Arpaio said. When Arpaio launched the site in July, he said he wanted to open up the jail to the public after he'd been accused of abusing inmates. Complaints about the site were collected by Donna Hamm, head of Middle Ground, an inmate rights group. Because some of the women in the holding cell could be juveniles, 'I think he's potentially an international child pornographer,' Hamm said. She has requested a federal civil rights investigation. Arpaio said the camera in the female section was cut 'until we can evaluate it.' He denied rights violations and said the images are available to anyone who visits the jail. |
