25 Suspects Freed From Miss. Jail

Jails in a Mississippi county have become so crowded that the sheriff said he had to release 25 felony suspects.
Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said the county's three jails are packed with pretrial felony suspects, and he is refusing to take any more misdemeanor inmates from Jackson, the county's largest city.
'When it comes to moving these people through the system, this is where the jam is,' McMillin said. The 25 inmates released last week included 12 alleged car thieves; all 25 were considered non-violent.
Prisoner rights attorney Ron Welch said in some instances, inmates had been kept in 24-hour holding cells for up to two weeks. Some were forced to sleep on floors and benches, while others went without showers.
