Telecommunications giant WorldCom Inc. must refund more than half a million dollars in overcharges on collect phone calls made by California prisoners to their families. The state Public Utilities Commission told the Clinton, Miss.-based company to use the $522,458 to help reduce the cost of future inmate calls from California prisons. The commission said it would be virtually impossible to track down specific convicts and offer them individual refunds. However, inmates and their families can still seek individual refunds on their own. The Utility Consumer Action Network filed the complaint in June 1999. WorldCom later corrected several billing problems and negotiated the settlement with UCAN and it was approved by the PUC. |
