The Alabama House approved a state operating budget that includes only a small increase in funding for the state's strained prison system. Alabama's prison system has faced growing turmoil recently, with two sheriffs earlier this month sending more than 200 inmates from their overcrowded jails to state prisons where cellblocks are already packed. The state has no plans to build more prisons. The $1.2 billion budget approved Tuesday included $197.3 million in spending on the Department of Corrections, $11 million more than current funding. But the department's spokesman, John Hamm, said the increase would do little to eliminate a shortage of prison officers. ``We do not have any money in the budget for next year to hire additional officers. All we have is money to hire replacements'' for officers who will likely leave, Hamm said. Hamm said the department is about 300 officers short. |
