South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges has announced that he will appoint retired Army National Guard Brigadier General Gary D. Maynard of Oklahoma as the new Director of the state's Department of Corrections.
'General Maynard has decades of experience keeping the people of Oklahoma safe from criminals,' Hodges said.
General Maynard has more than 25 years of service in corrections. From 1985-1987, he served as warden of Oklahoma State Penitentiary. As Oklahoma's only maximum-security prison, Oklahoma State Penitentiary includes the state's Death Row.
General Maynard has also served as Director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (1987 to 1992) and Adjutant General of the Oklahoma Military Department (1992 to 1995). General Maynard also served as the Oklahoma Cabinet Secretary for Veteran's Affairs (1993 to 1995).
General Maynard presently serves as Director of Corrections and Public Safety Programs at the University of Oklahoma. He is the author of the 13th edition of ARCO Correction Officer, a standard textbook for prospective corrections officers.
General Maynard is a retired brigadier general with 32 years of service in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He has been awarded numerous military honors including the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal and membership in the Field Artillery Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.
General Maynard has served on the Standards Committee of the American Correctional Association, where he participated in writing the standards governing adult and juvenile boot camps.
