A Pennsylvania death row inmate who claimed he helped his wife earn part of her $2 million fortune while he was in prison is owed only $7,500, a court-appointed divorce mediator said. Scott Wayne Blystone is imprisoned at the Geene County State Correctional Institution for killing a hitchhiker for $13 in gasoline money in 1983. Three years ago, Blystone married a pen pal, Sharon Flora, in a civil ceremony in which they stood separated by a glass partition in a prison visiting room. She moved to the Uniontown area to be near Blystone. Blystone filed divorce papers a year later and asked a judge to freeze the couple's assets after Flora cut off his $100 monthly allowance. Blystone said he feared Flora would liquidate their holdings, which he estimated at $1.9 million. But in court papers filed last week, mediator Barbara Billing Carl said the couple made only $30,000 during their marriage and Blystone is due $7,524. The mediator recommended the divorce be granted. Blystone claimed he earned the couple's fortune using investment techniques gleaned from reading financial magazines and The Wall Street Journal for 10 hours a day in his cell. Flora claimed Blystone's investments were too risky and saw her husband as a con man who married her for money after plying her with sob stories. |
